Abstract

The present case report describes the clinical evaluation and treatment of a vaginal spindle cell tumor consistent with leiomyoma or low-grade leiomyosarcoma in an 8-year-old Cocker dog. The dog was presented to the clinic with an apparent vaginal mass protruding from the vulva. Vaginal examination revealed a round-shaped, approximately 3 to 4 cm in diameter, erosive, solid mass protruding from the vulva. A few pieces of different-sized small submucosal masses were detected in digital vaginal and vaginoscopic examination. There was no vaginal discharge. Any ovarian or uterine pathology or neoplastic mass was not detected during transabdominal ultrasonography. The patient was scheduled for surgical resection of the vaginal masses and ovariohysterectomy. All the tumoral masses, ovaries and uterus were removed and sent to the laboratory for histopathological examination. Based on the histopathological findings, a presumptive diagnosis of a spindle cell tumor, consistent with leiomyoma or low-grade leiomyosarcoma, was offered. The immunohistochemical staining (IHC) was recommended to the dog owner for definitive diagnosis, but the owner declined IHC due to the high cost of analysis. The malignancy diagnosis is necessary for scheduling the post-operative patient-tailored follow-up and chemotherapy. Therefore, the definitive diagnosis of leiomyoma or leiomyosarcoma is important for improving effective treatment, survival and quality of life.
